A youth pilgrimage to Lourdes, during the day procession.

The next day, having attended morning Mass and received Communion, they went to the piscines. The father stayed outside praying, while the mother and nurse went in to bathe the child, who cried and struggled in the water. No improvement then or later that afternoon, when the child was bathed again. Dr. Boissarie, president of the Medical Bureau, observed Yvonne walking in her wretched fashion, held up by her mother and nurse, her feeble legs continually doubling up under her. The parents persisted in prayer. There are quite a number of recorded Lourdes miracles that occurred after several pilgrimages or after a number of immersions in the baths or attendances at Mass or the Procession.

On the morning of the 26th, after her third bath Yvonne began to walk by herself with a stability which could not have been more complete in the case of a normal child, making her first steps in a state of perfect equilibrium. The instantaneous nature of this result is of very special interest. We were all overcome by emotion. My father-in-law, formerly President of the Nantes Tribunal of Commerce was profoundly moved.

That day Dr. Boissarie saw the child walk alone several times. On the next day, the morning of the 27th, at the Medical Bureau, Dr. Boissarie made her walk alone, having removed the iron supports. The wooden soles then acted only as ordinary soles. The knees as well as the legs had obtained their normal movements.

To sum up, here is an infant with double club feet, with considerable wasting of the muscles of both legs, with the ligaments of the knees relaxed, operated on at 15 months without result and in whom massage had produced practically no good, suddenly attaining her balance, walking with the same stability as other children of her own age, using and placing her feet quite normally. My medical confreres had said this child would not walk for several years. Suddenly, aged 22 months she walks as if she had always done so normally. I wish to emphasise this point: my child, not 2 years old instantaneously attained perfect equilibrium and was able to walk. This is very difficult to explain from a scientific point of view.

The will to walk, suggestion, faith healing, imagination are all absent. The various theories about suggestion all fail here. At this age a child cannot be hypnotised. . . . [This was written at the time Charcot was making his claims, without ever going to Lourdes, that all cures there were of “nervous” origin.]

In describing this case which touches me so closely I have desired to assume my share in thanking and making known Our Lady of Lourdes.

In presenting this signed statement by Dr. Aumaitre, Yvonne’s father and his personal friend, Dr. E. Le Bec made several points in his book Medical Proof of the Miraculous. The first were medical: The surgical operation failed because of “the very atrophied condition of the muscles of the legs and thighs.
